Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani is not only famous for its excellence in academics, but also for its splendid success in sport and cultural activities. BITS Open Sports Meet (BOSM) is the annual sports festival of BITS, Pilani. This five-day competition is one of the largest student-managed sports fests in the country. In its 32nd edition now, BOSM was held from the 21st to the 25th of September, 2017.
The very first edition of BOSM took place in the year 1986. Initially, the fest used to be a one-day event that was planned and executed by the institute itself. Over the years, it has evolved into the entirely student-run, not-for-profit fest that it is today. BOSM is also the only sports fest in the country to have an official mascot - Baxter the Desert Eagle.
This edition of BOSM had teams from all around the country come in along with a few international teams from Sri Lanka. The turnout was close to 1700 participants from over 80 colleges.
The chief guest of BOSM 2017 was Devendra Jhajharia, a Paralympic gold medalist. He won his first gold in the javelin throw at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens and bettered his previous record by winning another gold at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. He has also been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2012, Arjuna Award in 2004, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2016.
Tanvie Hans, one of the most successful women footballers from India, addressed all students on the 22nd of September. She has played for some of the best football clubs in the world, including Tottenham Hotspurs FC and Fulham FC.
BITS Pilani also partnered with India on Track - Arsenal Soccer Schools India for the upcoming edition of BOSM. A three-month football camp is being organised on campus, with foreign professional coaches training the students. This association is the first of its kind, as BITS Pilani is the only college in India to have professional football training being offered to its students, thus strengthening the institute's commitment to an all round development of a student's personality.
BOSM 2017 was also graced by the presence of outstanding comedians Sumit Anand and Rahul Subramaniam ,who performed to a packed auditorium on the penultimate day of BOSM, leaving the audience in splits.
